The
Lady with the Little Dog SYNOPSIS On vacation
the married ‚bon vivant’ Gurov encounters the young married
lady Anna. Unexpectedly the first light romance soon turns
into a love, that changes both of their life’s. A timeless film
about the eternal love theme. A photographic film based on the
story by Anton Chekhov. Statement of
Director With the new
technologies and some grown-up thought in mind, I decided to embark upon an
experiment based on the story by Anton Chekhov 'The Lady with
the Little Dog'. I hadnor low nor big budget, I didn't even have a dog, only
a camera and a desire to fulfill a dream. Two
professions, as film director and photographer, gave me the idea to try a new
form - the photo film. I wanted to create literary cinema and to captivate
the audience with the classical literary text. Taking the text apart, in turn
and with the help of V. Nabokov, I came to my own interpretation. The tale is
eccentric, ironic, mocking - it is taking place in the here and now and at the
same time it can be seen as a parable for all times. I
deliberately ignore the illustration - the tiny, century old details of
Russian life, just as I do without jeans and gray hooded sweaters - they are
the uniform of big cities in our days. I wanted this banal love story to be
compellingly real and warm and also theatrically eccentric. The still life
became an important component of the film. I consider it as an indispensible
part of human life - like cloth, where the threads of fabric intertwine and form
the fate of Things and
people. In our century, all accelerates with great speed. I wanted to show
that a static image can be dynamic
and filled with thought and feelings, just like traditional cinema. Julij Koltun
